Howell (history, Prairie View A&M U.) had edited an anthology that incorporates the most recent research on the lives of Texans during the Civil War. The 18 contributors describe the home lives of families scrambling to subsist while husbands and fathers were away at war and the well-known battles that occurred in or near Texas. Authors also describe life inside a Confederate prison and the activities of state and local officials during the war. The book concludes with new analysis of the political, social, and cultural life of Texans during the war, including women, Union prisoners, African Americans, and noncombatants.
