Journals can foster college students' learning, voice, and creative thinking, and help faculty members and administrators organize, prioritize, build problem-solving skills, and decrease stress. This work presents background on the value of journals so that readers can determine whether journals will fit appropriately with their teaching objectives or help them manage their personal and professional lives. Background on theories of reflection, adult development, and transformational learning is followed by advice on how and when to introduce journals in a course, how to give feedback on journal writing, and considerations when assigning journal writing in the computer age.
