Rockquemore (sociology and African American studies, U. of Illinois at Chicago), who founded a mentoring program for under-represented faculty, and Laszloffy, a coach and therapist for black and Latino faculty at predominantly white institutions, provide advice to African American scholars on winning tenure without sacrificing themselves. Based on their experiences working with these individuals, the book describes strategies that take into consideration the racism encountered during the process. It covers such subjects as time management, publication, teaching, and service, and ways to react in different situations by making conscious choices, effectively dealing with conflict, and building a support network.
