An important indirect effect of interstitial lung disease, a broad category of lung diseases that includes some 150 disorders characterized by scarring or fibrosis of the lungs, is on the pulmonary vasculature with resulting pulmonary hypertension. In this volume, editors Baughman (medicine, U. of Cincinnati Medical Center, US), Carbone (Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Respiratorias Ismael Cosío Villegas, Mexico), and Bottino (internal medicine, U. of Genoa, Italy) present 11 chapters that examine both the various interstitial lung disease as well as the incidence and outcome of pulmonary hypertension in the various interstitial diseases. Contributions first discuss general issues, including the evaluation of idiopathic interstitial lung diseases, the pathology of various interstitial lung diseases, and the evaluation of pulmonary hypertensions. They then deal with specific categories of disease, including bronchiolitis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, collagen vascular diseases, pulmonary hypertension with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis, and interstitial lung diseases associated with occupational exposures.
