The 14th symposium was scheduled for 12 September 2001. It was canceled, and uncertainty reigned in the Academy's history department until 2005, when it was decided to resume the annual scholarly gatherings. Of over 100 presentations, 13 were selected for publication. The topics include Roman naval capabilities in waters beyond the Mediterranean, American influence on Canadian wartime ship building, the strategic plight of the Spanish Republican Navy in the Spanish Civil War 1936-39, US Marines' counter-insurgency campaigns in Nicaragua during the early 20th century, and Navy women's pioneering experiences at sea.
