This group of essays treats the rise of Southeast Asia as an economic power. The first section is introduced by editor Trichur (political economy, St. Lawrence University) with an historical overview of changes in global economy over the past half century. Other essays also have a socio-historical background centered in Asia including the relationship of Asian countries with African states and with Russia. The second half deals with specific situations: economic politics in China, working conditions, and small fishing enterprises. The final essay addresses the cultural changes that might occur when one takes Asian belief systems into account, particularly in family structure and religion.
