Japanese native Nakane has lived in the U.S. since 1974, where she is an independent art historian and writer, and a regular contributor to art journals and catalogs of Asian American art. Originally published in 1985, her text offers an account of the first-generation Japanese immigrants who came to the Pajaro Valley of central California in the early 1900s, where they were key contributors to the development of the region's strawberry farming. Based on interviews Nakane conducted in the early 1980s with those Issei still living in the area, the text traces the lives of the immigrants from their arrival through the difficult, anti-immigration years of WWII, and their resumption of life after the war.
