In his early career working at a Veterans Administration Alcohol Treatment Unit, Brooks (psychology, Baylor U., Waco, Texas), the author of several books on the male experience and psychotherapy, saw firsthand male gender strain in reaction to second-wave feminism in the early 1970s. To integrate multiple masculinities with the new psychology of men, he presents a transtheoretical model (after Prochaska & Norcross, 2007) that encompasses processes and stages of change. The book includes responses from group therapy members on what it means to be a man, a list of other provocative questions for clients, and resources for multicultural competence with men and boys in therapy.
