Although more Civil War fighting occurred in Missouri than anywhere outside Virginia and Tennessee, the war's events in this border state is nowhere near as well known. For this book, a retired physician and amateur historian (Sweeney) and a history professor at Missouri State University (Piston) have assembled hundreds of Civil War-era photographs (many published here for the first time), revealing much about military activities in Missouri (both the "official" battles and the vicious guerilla war) and providing a literal glimpse into the eyes of many combatants.
