Armed with little more than determination, a fine set of wheels, and decades of college, Johnson (Denver Museum of Nature and Science) and artist Troll set off to find every sort of fossil and fossil-related person they could on a 5,000-mile trip through Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming. Along the way they describe the basics of paleontology as they encounter people whose souls commune with the bones of dinosaurs, traces of life millions of years old, and fossils visible at 65 MPH. In this travelogue and field guide they teach budding paleonerds about why the fossils are there, how to locate them, and what to do once they find them. This is masterfully illustrated (you are probably wearing one of Troll's tee-shirts right now) and Johnson and Troll are very entertaining hosts.
