The editors (professors of American and English literature at the U. Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain) present 14 essays that examine textual representations of post-conflict transitions to peace. Opening essays focus on the return of combatants and include discussions of British soldier-poets anticipating the end of World War I, the fates of the characters of F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tender is the Night as illustrative of the complexities of the return to peace, Japanese attitudes towards returning World War II veterans, pamphlets aiming to aid American and British World War II veterans' transitions to normalcy, and the impacts on the African American community of returning Vietnam veterans in the novels of Toni Morrison. Issues of reconciliation are considered in examinations of John Dryden's Troilus and Cressida or Truth Found Too Late (1679), post-conflict romance in the mid-19th century novels of Rebecca Harding Davis and John William De Forest, British representations of post-colonial India, and questions of identity in the writings of Vietnamese exiles. The penultimate essays analyze women's perspectives of the end of World War I, the Spanish Civil War, and World War II and the final essay focuses on women as war victims of World War II.
