Lionel Pries was an influential teacher of architecture and design at the University of Washington whose prominent students included Minoru Yamasaki, A.Q. Jones, George Wimberly, Paul Kirk, Roland Terry, and Fred Bassetti among others. However he was abruptly dismissed from the University in late 1958 because of his sexual orientation and died only ten years after. Oschsner (architecture, U. of Washington) seeks to redress Pries' obscurity, tracing his life and influential work as a designer, architect, teacher, and artist. Oschsner writes critically on both Pries' impact on Northwest architecture and his work, while tracing his life chronologically. This book is generously illustrated in both black-and-white and color, including building plans, historic and current photography, and images of Pries' artwork.
