From the Institute of Medicine, this volume summarizes the Workshop on Health Literacy, eHealth, and Communication: Putting the Consumer First, which explored strategies for improving the ways in which information and communication technologies address the needs of those with low health literacy and language barriers. The workshop considered the current status of communications technology, particularly electronic records systems; challenges of communication technology used for populations with low health literacy; and strategies for increasing the benefit of these technologies for these populations, with healthcare practitioners from the US describing various technologies and their challenges.
