Price and Benton-Short (both geography, George Washington U.) present a collection of 15 papers; the majority were originally given at a 2006 workshop held at George Washington U. which brought together scholars and policy makers to explore how immigrants are transforming cities around the world. All the sites function as gateway cities, both as endpoints for arriving immigrants and as turnstiles through which immigrants move in and out. The 18 international contributors compare the experiences of three categories of gateway cities: established immigrant sites such as New York, Sydney, Toronto, Birmingham (UK), and Amsterdam; emerging gateways with relatively recent immigrant flows including Singapore, Washington, D.C., Dublin, Johannesburg; and global cities such as Riyadh, Tel Aviv, Seoul, and São Paolo considered "exceptional" immigration- wise for their highly restrictive immigration policies or lesser immigrant flow.
