Controversial and environmentally reprehensible, the damming of the Colorado River at Glen Canyon in 1965 proved by the late 1990s to be a failure. Lake Powell silted up and then went dry in years of drought. There is now real hope the dam will be removed and the astonishingly beautiful canyon will return to something like its original state.
