This is the third war data handbook of the Correlates of War project, which seeks to gather comprehensive quantifiable and categorical data on all types of wars. The project categorizes wars according to a typology related to state sovereignty and collects data on participants, dates, battle-related deaths, alliances, initiator, and outcome in order to allow an understanding of long-term trends in war (such as the fact that initiators are increasingly unlikely to win wars in recent years). The handbook presents this data for all identified wars, together with brief narrative descriptions, and concludes with a discussion of some of the key trends in global warfare.
