Anne Bloomfield, a consultant in architectural history, intended to produce a bare-bones survey of historical properties in the San Francisco neighborhood, sweetened with a selection of articles about particular buildings that she wrote over the course of 14 years for the New Fillmore, a neighborhood monthly. When she died with the project not even started, her husband Arthur, a music critic and food writer, decided to scrap the boring survey part, and just edit slightly and assemble her articles.
