Stavig (history, U. of South Florida) and Schmidt (anthropology, U. of South Florida-St. Petersburg) present a collection of 140 documentary source readings--letters, eyewitness accounts, governmental documents--documenting the three indigenous rebellions that threatened Spain's control of its South American colonies in the 1780s. Each document is introduced with explanatory headnote, and a general introduction provides historical, cultural, and political context. The text also includes maps, a chronology of the rebellions, and a glossary. Previously available only in Spanish, the English translations of the documents now makes them available to a wider audience of undergraduates, graduates, professional scholars, and others interested in the Andes of the 18th century.
