Research ethics as codified by professional organizations and committal or values ethics have often been divorced in anthropology. Social anthropologists Armbruster (German and transnational studies, U. of Southampton, UK) and Lærke (Open U., UK) introduce nine chapters by international contributors that treat ethical issues as questions of power of importance to activists and neoliberal governments in response to political crises. The first contribution calls for anthropologists to engage the view of the oppressed, as is often evident in the ethnographic fieldwork sites selected in these case studies.
