This two-volume set collects the proceedings of the seventh international archaeological conference on "The Mesolithic in Europe," which is held every five years and took place this time in Belfast, Northern Ireland, during August/September 2005. It contains approximately 140 papers that are organized, for the most part, according to the sessions of the conference: new lands, mobility, people in their environment, people and places, regional identities, dwellings, transitions, ritual in context, understanding the social context, understanding Mesolithic technology, flint alternatives, and current research. Some examples of specific topics include colonization processes in early archipelagos in east central Sweden, analyzing mobility and settlement through regional surface survey in south-west German, automating the extrapolation of sea-level displacement curves and implications for Mesolithic research in western Norway, Mesolithic people in an open Mediterranean wetland, technical traditions as a means of characterizing cultural identities, Mesolithic house structures in western Norway, the paleoecological and paleodietary significance of edible land snails across the Pleistocene-Holocene transition on the eastern Adriatic coast, chronology in Mesolithic burial practice, the identification of children's flint knapping products in Mesolithic Scandinavia, and strategies of lithic raw material procurement in Mesolithic Europe.
