In this collection reprinting 11 of his essays, 1988-2007, Freeman (emeritus, U. of Sussex, UK) is introduced by Dosi (Technical Change and Economics, 1988) as one of the founders of the economics of innovation as a distinct sub-field of social science. Freeman's papers introduce his analytical concepts of "national systems of innovation and of production" and a "theory of reasoned history" (as vs. theories of political economy proposed by Adam Smith, Marx, Keynes, and Schumpeter, among others). Evolutionary economics treats such topics of the evolving global economy as how technological advances drive structural economic adjustments and social policy, the degree to which national systems of innovation support adoption of new technologies, and characteristics of innovating firms.
