Nhema (executive secretary, Organization for Social Science Research in Eastern and Southern Africa, Ethiopia) and Zeleza (African American studies, U. of Illinois, US) present nine papers from a November/December 2004 conference on "African Conflicts: Management, Resolution, Post-conflict Recovery and Development." The papers provide an overview of Africa's civil wars from 1950 to 1992, discuss conflict in Sudan from the perspective of multiple complexity, explore the issue of citizenship as it relates to conflict in Côte d'Ivoire, analyze postcolonial rebel movements and violence against the peasantry, apply and update the psychological theories of Franz Fanon with regard to African women combatants, explore global elements of African conflict, survey African legislative responses to terrorism and the protection of human rights, discuss implications of conflicts for poverty and food security policies in Africa, and assess whether Uganda can be considered a democratic development state or a failed state.
