During the Great Rebellion in Upper Peru of the early 1780s, the Catholic Church and its ministers were consistent targets of attacks by Indian rebels. Robins (Ph.D., Tulane U.) examines conflicts between Catholic clerics and their Indian parishioners in the generation prior to the Great Rebellion in order to address the question of the genesis of these attacks. He also explores how divisions and rivalries among colonial elites were expressed in community-church relations. He finds that much of the conflict involved disputes over religious fees, the use of forced Indian labor, the growth of financial obligations associated with religious confraternities, and the assessment and collection of Indian tithes.
