According to Lee (California State Polytechnic U.), the thermodynamic properties and applications of electrolyte solutions have not been adequately covered in the undergraduate literature, in spite of their growing importance in chemical industry, biology, and nature. He therefore presents this "learning primer" on electrolyte solutions, their connection to the modern molecular approaches in the field, and important industrial applications. The first five chapters present basic introductory material, including the thermodynamics of electrolyte solutions, basic electrostatics, the Debye-Hückel theory, and Pitzer's formulation for electrolytes. The next four chapters lay the groundwork for molecular theories, emphasizing statistical mechanics. Finally, the industrial applications of absorption refrigeration and natural gas processing are discussed. The CD-ROM contains software for calculations relevant to the industrial applications.
