This study makes use of prior research on immigration in the U.S. in the early to mid-1800s, but it is not intended to be simply a detailed historical chronology. While information such as who went where when is included, author Berquist's intent is to recreate the world immigrants lived in, and to understand the activities that filled their daily lives. The author notes that the America of the early 19th century was not necessarily a welcoming place, contrary to some more uplifting accounts. The America of that era was constantly changing and often consumed with internal conflict. While many of the immigrants were honorable, hardworking people, the newcomers also included a fair share of criminals and rogues. This is the background against which this book was written.
