Ives, field director of the McGill Sub-Arctic Research Laboratory from 1957 to 1960, combines geological history and personal anecdotes in this personal narrative of the lab's first ten years. The author arrived at the isolated laboratory with his new bride, along with a handful of other graduate students from McGill University, and their friendships and relationships are interwoven with their work developing research programs in the Labrador-Ungava Subarctic and Arctic region. Several brief appendices provide background on geological concepts. The book is illustrated with b&w and color photos of the team and the wilderness, and includes 20 pages of up-to-date biographies of 15 graduate student participants.
