For a long time, teachers and researchers in psychology and education believed that once readers were able to identify the words on a page, they would automatically comprehend the text, but it has turned out that while decoding is necessary for comprehension, it is not sufficient. Specialists in learning and teaching literacy take behavioral and biological routes seeking the foundations of successful reading comprehension. Among their topics are eye movements and moment-to-moment comprehension processes in reading, the roles of fluent decoding and vocabulary, the decision reliability and validity of three reading fluency measures for predicting outcomes on statewide reading accountability tests, and sources of poor comprehension in older poor readers.
