In this text, Openshaw presents tools for social work students learning about practice in school settings from preschool to high school. After a chapter on the role of the school social worker, she describes skills for observation, assessment, intervention, and research, and strategies for dealing with problems such as violence, trauma, parental absence, divorce, substance abuse, poverty, bereavement, and mental health issues, including treatment options such as group work, play therapy, social skills training, and behavior management. Developmental issues and problems related to specific ages and grade levels are covered. Additional contributors (a social worker, therapist, and academic) discuss work with immigrant children and communities. Case examples are incorporated, as are reproducible forms.
