Ethnic cleansing is not necessarily a euphemism for genocide, says Mulaj (ethno-political and Arab and Islamic studies, U. of Exeter), though in its extreme forms it may be indistinguishable. She argues that the expulsion of targeted communities in the Balkan Peninsula during the 1990s was purported to serve the policy of nation-state building and ancillary efforts of national elites to achieve security for the dominant nation. The study began as her Ph.D. dissertation at the London School of Economics and Political Science in November 2004; parts of it have been published as journal articles.
