In this clearly-written study of philosophy in Late Antique Alexandria, Robertson (philosophy, Felician College, New Jersey) focuses on the ways in which a philosophy of language and its relationship to mind are developed in Philo, Clement, Origen and Plotinus. He examines the Stoic and Platonic influence on all of them and how they diverged from earlier writers. Clement and Origen are most often studied in the light of developing Christian doctrine, rather than their links to Greek tradition. Both Philo, a Jew, and the Christian Platonist, Plotinus, had a profound effect on medieval and early modern philosophy.
