Hiroshima Immigrants in Canada, 1891-1941

Ayukawa resides in Victoria, BC, Canada, and has published widely on Japanese-Canadian history. The child of Hiroshima immigrants, she was born in 1930 and raised in Vancouver's Japanese-Canadian society, where she was enculturated to Hiroshima customs and traditions and also to the regional dialect. In her latest text, she investigates Japanese migration to Canada before WWII, exploring the political, economic, and social conditions in Hiroshima prefecture that contributed to emigration between 1891 and 1941, and the lives and experiences of those immigrants who settled in Western Canada. The text incorporates information from a variety of sources including interviews, diaries, community histories, biographies, and the author's own family history. Illustrated with b&w photographs and maps. Distributed in the U.S. by UTP Distribution. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
