Huntington, a marketing and management professor, considers hip hop dance as a text, as a commentary, and as a function of identity construction within the realm of consumerism. In addition, she provides a reading of hip hop dance and social positioning of African Americans from a black feminist point of view and documents its commoditization and codification. She traces its social history from the diaspora to the present and uses images from films, commercials, and studios, along with research, to formulate a theory that is linked to capitalism.
