During the 18th and early 19th centuries, British and American men were abducted by 'press gangs' and forced to serve in the British Navy and on pirate ships. Choate (history, the College of Coastal Georgia) presents personal accounts by 13 men who survived impressments. The narratives, excerpts from published autobiographical accounts, are interwoven with the editor's comments. Epilogues for most of the men tell what happened to them after they escaped or were set free, based on autobiographical and other accounts. The book includes b&w historical illustrations.
