Given the startling changes in higher education in the last decade due to policy shifts, finance and demographics it stands to reason that the role of the faculty will change as well. Here two academics specializing in the administration of higher education and a practitioner-turned consultant give a comprehensive overall framework and fit it with practical elements (equity, academic freedom, flexibility, professional growth and collegiality) necessary for transitional institutions requiring the work of newly inspired faculty. They describe the circumstances of the changing context of higher education, the framework, which includes the concepts of shared responsibility and joint leadership, and define each of the key elements as points in the overall strategy of improving both the efficacy and the efficiency of instruction without eroding the essential purpose of higher education.
