Cash, Color, and Colonialism

Cramer (law, politics and society, Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa) details the social criteria that affect the legal decision by the United States government to grant a group tribal status. Her findings reflect the amount of unspoken prejudice that still exists in America. Tribes that interbred more with black than white settlers are less likely to be approved. She also notes that the more acculturated a tribe is, the less likely it will be recognized as such. The match to this fire is the widespread establishment of casinos on tribal lands. People are accused of cashing in on a tenuous ancestral connection. Woven in to the problem is that there is still a gap in understanding of different tribal customs. The title of the book reminds the reader that non-Indians remain part of a colonial culture and that the government continues to treat Native Americans as a conquered people.
