Drawing on the theoretical constructs of thinkers such as Derrida, Foucault, Gramsci, and Adorno, among others, the 9 authors of the articles of this collection offer their analysis of the geographic complexities evidenced mainly in the literature of the Caribbean, though two articles are devoted to art and music. Through their analysis, the authors highlight themes of Caribbean life and history, including the relation of Cuban adventure stories to the position of the military in Cuba, the horrors of the botpippel attempting to cross to the US from Haiti, and the impacts of colonialism. The editors each contribute a chapter of their own; Paravisini-Gebert (Caribbean studies, Vassar College) writes about literary references to colonial destruction of the islands' environment and Romero-Cesareo (Latin American and Caribbean studies, Marist College) contributes a chapter on representation of AIDS in Caribbean art and literature.
