Arguing that African countries are part of the globalizing world, Grant (geography and regional studies, U. of Miami) examines how the city of Accra, Ghana, was transformed by globalization on multiple levels. He explores the impact of urban and economic change brought on by globalization in the city, based on research he conducted over a period of 11 years that included corporate and household surveys, interviews with policy makers and urban agents, and data from national organizations like the Ghana Statistical Service. He discusses how globalization has been created from "above" (by international organizations and the government); "below" (through local resistance or by nongovernmental organizations); and "in-between" these two levels. Within chapters, he considers foreign companies, corporate space, residential spaces and the spread of gated communities, land and residential sales, the role of returning migrants to their networks and spaces, slum-dwellers and slum-dweller organizations.
