In the fourth of six volumes devoted to the fourth-century Christian classic, Walsh (emeritus humanity, U. of Glasgow) presents Latin texts facing pages of English translation for two chapters that are particularly important for students of Roman religion, because Augustine grapples with the works of Terrentium Varro, the leading Roman authority on the mythical, natural, and civic theologies of Rome. The Latin text is that of Dombert-Kalb (fifth edition, Leipzig 1928-29) with some minor adjustments to text and punctuations. Extensive commentary follows the texts.
