James B. Austin, a steel industry executive with a passion for Japanese prints, donated his extensive collection to Carnegie Museum of Art in 1989. His gift included more than 1,000 modern prints whose diverse themes, styles, and techniques mirror the dramatic transformations in Japanese life and culture in the twentieth century. Modern Japanese Prints presents this significant but little-known Pittsburgh collection, which contains exceptional singular works as well as numerous complete sets produced in such limited numbers they are seldom seen today. In the case of several artists, this publication extends the limited documentation of their work in the English language and should prove a valuable survey for scholars, collectors, and those with an interest in Japanese art and culture.
