In 1913 what was to become Georgia State University was merely a department within the Georgia Institute of Technology, created to provide commercial training to engineers. In the ensuing fifty-six years GSU grew to become an essential part of the cultural and educational development of Atlanta, as well as a major research institution drawing students from every state in the US and over one hundred other countries. The mutual, and highly interconnected development of Georgia State and Atlanta is an interesting story of the New South. GSU is one of the institutions that is a testament to and influencing factor in the region's development. This book documents this history.
