Trümper (classical archaeology, U. of North Carolina-Chapel Hill) contributes her contribution to the debate over whether there were buildings or sites that were designed and outfitted specifically for the sale of slaves in the Graeco-Roman world. She begins by analyzing slave markets in many other countries, including the US, to assess whether better known slave-holding cultures had purpose-built slave markets, and if so, where they might be located and what they might look like. Then she examines ancient written sources for clues about locations and features of slave markets. With all this in hand, she looks at eight potential sites that she and other archaeologists have excavated, and finds none of them convincingly identified as a slave market.
