This text for first- and second-year graduate students covers theory and methods of nonparametric statistical inference procedures. Techniques are illustrated using research examples from the social, behavioral, and life sciences. Most procedures are presented with tests of hypothesis, confidence interval estimation, sample size determination, and comparisons to other relevant procedures. Each procedure chapter reviews the mathematical logic on which the statistical test is based and the basic tools necessary for comprehending the literature published in the statistics journals. The book also gives examples of computer applications based on Minitab, SA, and StatXact and compares these examples with hand calculations. About 60 pages of appendices offer tables for solving the book's data-oriented problems. This fifth edition contains new material on goodness-of-fit tests, a new chapter on choosing among the various nonparametric procedures covered, and new problems and exercises.
