Kaufman (sociology, Temple U.) analyzes how race and gender influence the allocation and segregation of labor market positions. He uses the term "race-sex groups" to indicate the necessity of recognizing the intersection between race and sex and thus conducts his analysis based upon comparisons of the labor market positions of black women, black men, white women, and white men as they are funneled into different types of jobs, which are themselves compared in terms of such factors as types of skills/exertion needed, union vs. non-union jobs, compensation, and relative autonomy. The relationship between this sorting and race-sex earning gaps is then addressed. He explores the key roles of race-sex stereotyping and devaluation processes in labor market segregation, but also explores how they are moderated by such factors as observed changes in demand for labor and regional differences in the United States.
