The sixth edition of this handbook for authors and editors in the UK medical field is designed solely to be a portable reference on basic units, symbols and abbreviations. Baron and Clarke, both medical professionals, were commissioned by the Royal Society of Medicine to track down new terminology that has emerged in the last 14 years (which was when the fifth edition was published). Most of the changes in these new standards reflect the advent of electronic media to process medical information, and how much of the present medical literature is released through electronic means.
