Practicing Psychology in Primary Care

Practicing Psychology in Primary Care equips psychologists, other mental health professionals, and trainees to work effectively in a primary care setting ù the principal site today for psychiatric care, behavioral health risk reduction, and psychological treatment of numerous physical or functional complaints.

The primary care setting has a "culture" that is very distinct from more traditional mental health settings, and so the first part of this book teaches both professional clinicians and students about the norms, communication styles, social rituals, and roles they need to understand to be effective psychologists in primary care.

Psychological therapies in primary care must be symptom focused and brief. A broad-based epidemiological perspective is also necessary to address mood and anxiety disorders, medical nonadherence, and health risk behaviors. The core chapters in this book therefore describe counseling techniques developed specifically for primary care such as the Four A's and BATHE, the Transtheoretical Model (TM), adaptations of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Problem-Solving Therapy (PSA), as well as cross-cultural considerations and consultations as a mental health intervention.

"This comprehensive and accessible book by one of the country's foremost primary care psychologists is a "must-read" for new and experienced psychologists wishing to better understand the scope, challenges, interventions, and pathways for optimal practice in this burgeoning field."-Ryan M. Niemiec, PsyD, Education Director, VIA Institute on Character Former Director of Behavioral Services at St. Louis University's Primary Care & Prevention Center

"This excellent book covers all the important challenges and issues psychologists are likely to encounter in the primary care setting, and I heartily recommend it to any psychologist working in this environment. Primary care physicians, particularly family medicine residents in training, would also greatly benefit from its practical insights."-Mark B. Mengel, MD, MPH Vice Chancellor, Regional Programs, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences
