Maisto (Center for Health and Behavior, Syracuse University) aims to increase clinicians' access to empirically supported interventions for alcohol use disorders (AUDs). The assessment and intervention procedures he describes have all undergone extensive scrutiny and evaluation, both in a formal research sense and in actual clinical practice. Chapters cover definitions of AUDs, theories and models of AUDs, diagnosis and treatment indications, and treatment methods and considerations, and include helpful margin key points and checklists. There is a list of print and nonprint resources for patients and practitioners, and an appendix provides forms to use in assessment and treatment, such as a daily drinking diary and a worksheet on coping strategies.
