Wehmeyer (special education, Kansas U.) et al. articulate, for teachers, how to promote self-determination in students who have intellectual and developmental disabilities and the available methods for teaching them, such as choice making, problem solving, decision making, goal setting, self-advocacy, and self- regulated learning. They focus on instructional programs or methodologies that have an empirical basis and argue that they should be linked to the general education curriculum. They discuss the applicability and impact of the self- determination construct, the role of student-directed learning, promoting self- determined behavior, and teacher and student-directed strategies. The latter includes picture cues, self-monitoring, self-evaluation, and self- instruction. The book closes with a discussion of practices that promote student involvement in educational planning and decision making and the role of technology and universal design for learning.
