Hibbert offers general readers a narrative history of the American War of Independence told largely from the British and loyalist points of view; professional historians might be interested in some of the new sources he has found however, which are listed in the bibliography not cited in the text itself. He does include maps. Among the events he describes are the Sons of Liberty, Washington takes command, the battle for New York, surrender at Saratoga, marching through Georgia, the traitor and the spy, and the road to Yorktown.
