For some years before 2007, with editor Stan Dragland and Joan Eichner, her long time friend and editorial assistant, Margaret Avison had been working on her autobiography. After Margaret's death in July of that year, it was left to the two colleagues, drawing on their experience of collaboration with Margaret, to prepare her work for publication. So as to flesh out the sense of Margaret Avison, the person and the poet, they have shaped an appendix of essays, letters and interviews. The result is an augmented self-portrait by one of Canada's best and most revered writers, a woman of 'almost unparalleled humanity and humility' who lived for poetry both before and after the watershed experience of her life: her conversion experience of 1963.
