Hockaday, a journalist in Seattle, describes the work in Washington and Oregon during the first decade of the 20th century of landscape architect John Charles Olmsted, stepson of the legendary Frederick Law Olmsted, and a partner in the family firm. He furthered and extended the concepts of open and green spaces as important elements in healthy urban life. Among his designs are the Lewis and Clark Exposition in Portland, Oregon College campuses, Seattle parks and boulevards, the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, Spokane and the inland northwest, and Vancouver Island.
